In
this seminar, we will not attempt to discover new solutions
to the loudspeaker/room problem, but hopefully you will be
able to build a loudspeaker system that will make a
substantial improvement to your enjoyment of broadcast or
recorded music. In the process, we hope that you will enjoy
the experience of learning how a two-way loudspeaker system
functions while gaining exposure to some of the concepts and
experimental techniques that you will be learning in a more
systematic way from the regular laboratory and classroom
instruction provided by your chosen curriculum.
This
First Year Seminar provides The Graduate Program in
Acoustics with an opportunity to introduce undergraduates to
the acoustics program at Penn State. Many of the faculty
and students in The Program became interested in acoustics
through an appreciation of music and the technical
challenges presented by its performance, recording, and
reproduction. This interest led many of us to design and
build one or more loudspeaker systems for music listening or
performance while we were in high school or college. Those
experiences motivated us to further our education in science
and mathematics to learn how to improve both our designs,
and our understanding of their performance.
